Tems: Woman Crush Wednesday

Tems is a singer, songwriter, and record producer. She has been active in the music scene since 2018, but rose to fame in 2020 after she featured in Wizkid’s hit single “Essence.” This gave her her first Grammy nomination.

Tems started learning music production from YouTube in 2018 and self-produced her single “Mr. Rebel,” after which she released “Try Me” and, from then on, started gaining more recognition. In 2020, Mr. Edu chose her as one of the 10 artists to watch out for.

She released her debut album in September 2020, where she was the primary producer, and by October of the same year, she featured in Wizkid’s Essence, which opened the door to her international recognition. The feature earned her her first billboard entry, peaking at number 9, and her Grammy nomination.

In 2022, she featured in Future’s song “Wait for You,” which peaked at number 1 on the billboard and earned her her first Grammy award.

So far, Tems has a Grammy award, two NAACP awards, two BET awards, and two Soul Train Music Awards. She also co-wrote Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up,” which has earned her nominations in the Academy Awards for best original song and the Golden Globes for best original song.

Tems is truly inspirational, as she went against the odds to produce her own songs before getting all this recognition a few years later.
